커피 (Keopi). That's Korean for coffee. Those of us who watch Korean dramas and shows will know that Koreans love their coffee. There will definitely be a coffee chain featured in every single K drama for e.g Goblin had Dal.komm, The Heirs had Mango Six. Koreans are iconic for drinking their iced Americano and iced latte.
If you are a coffee lover and you happen to be in the vicinity of town, you should definitely check out Paiks Coffee.
Paiks coffee, like the afore mentioned coffee chains is a hugely popular coffee chain that started in 2006 in South Korea by Chef Paik Jon Won. It has 3 outlets here in Singapore, Citylink Mall, Tiong Bahru Plaza and MapleTree Business City.
We went to the one located at Citylink Mall and it's hard to miss the cafe due to it's bright yellow and black decor. There are two separate sections in the cafe itself. Paiks Coffee and Paiks Bibim. Paiks Coffee mainly sells coffee, drinks and small bites such as sandwiches while Paiks Bibim sells heavier meals like spicy rice cakes and bibimbap.
We ordered the Iced Paik's Original Coffee ($3.8) which was their signature coffee and their Iced Caramel Macchiato ($5). The Iced Caramel Macchiato had caramel drizzled on the bottom as well as on top. It tasted very milky with a slight hint of caramel and sweetness. If you're not a person who likes their coffee milky, this is not the drink for you. Iced Paik's Original Coffee on the other hand tasted on point. It has the perfect balance of sweetness, bitterness and milkyness. The sweetness was just right at the point where you can still taste the coffee and bitterness and not overpoweringly sweet. It is definitely worthy of being their signature drink. One key thing that I loved about Paiks Coffees is that all of their iced coffees are served with shaved iced instead of ice cubes! You can actually munch on the ice while you sip the drink which just makes it so much more enjoyable at least for me.
We also ordered a serving of Spicy Korean Rice Cakes ($5) from Paik's Bibim. Coming from someone who loves to eat spicy rice cakes or what the Koreans call Tteok-bokki, Paik's Bibim's rice cakes were pretty delicious. It's served with Korean fishcake and kimchi. The sauce that came with the rice cakes had a good kick to it but it was not overly spicy. The rice cakes themselves were soft enough to the point where you can easily break them apart when you bite with your teeth but yet still surprisingly chewy. The best way to describe the dish would be that it tasted authentic, like what you would actually find if you went to Korea and bought spicy rice cakes from the street stalls.
If you happen to find yourself craving coffee or craving some Korean spicy rice cakes or maybe you just feel like being Korean for the day, Paik's Coffee and Paik's Bibim is definitely a worth while place to check out.
