You've probably heard of Old Airport Road. Like Maxwell Hawker Center, it is one of the big few popular and famous hawker centers in Singapore. Hawker centers are like Singapore's food treasures. They are pretty much a paradise for food lovers. 30 - 40 stalls selling uniquely different food in such a dense area, it is no wonder hawker center remains as one of our local favorite places to dine.
Today, i will be sharing with you 4 hidden gems within Old Aiport Road. These 4 are my personal favorite stalls and if you try them, i can guarantee your inner foodie will be satisfied.
Holy Grill is one of my favorite western stalls not just in hawker centers but in Singapore. The only reason that stops me from eating Holy Grill everyday is the fact that Old Aiport Road is pretty far from my place. Holy Grill's concept is similar to Aston's. You order 1 main and you a variety of sides to choose from. The sides include tasty rice, pasta salad, french fries, potato salad, house salad, baked potato. Pretty similar to Aston's in my opinion. However, the similarity with Aston's ends there. Every other thing it does, it does better than Aston's. It's portion size is bigger than Aston's, it's price is cheaper than Aston's and the taste, the taste is definitely better than Aston's.
My favorite is the Teriyaki Chicken. The chicken was soft, tender and juicy. The sauce had the perfect taste. Not too salty, not too sweet. The fries are crispy and fresh out of the fryer. Did i mention Holy Grill's version of tasty rice is chicken rice? I mean WHO DOESNT LOVE CHICKEN RICE? If you are a western lover, you definitely have to check out Holy Grill.
Xiao Long Bao. The delicious and fairly pricey chinese delicacy that we all know and love. Well, not anymore. Introducing 上海小笼包. This particular stall at Old Airport Road sells xiao long bao at really affordable prices so you can finally satisfy your xiao long bao cravings! The price definitely does not reflect the quality because the xiao long baos were delicious! The texture of the xiao long bao was just right and was full of flavorful and delicious broth that are waiting to burst inside your mouth. The meat was also extremely soft and tasty. They sell other dimsums apart from xiao long bao as well but are known for their xiao long baos. If you're craving xiao long bao, definitely check this place out!
If you're fan of roasted meat like roasted chicken, roasted pork and roasted duck, you should check out Roast Paradise. Located along the first row of stalls, Roast Paradise offers up many different types of roast meat. We tried the Shao Rou fan which stands for roasted pork rice. The roasted skin was crispy but the meat was slightly tough. The meat went well along with the garlic chilli. The rice was also very fragrant. They gave a little mustard drizzle on the side which we felt was purely for decor because it did not really went well with the roasted pork but overall, it was still a great dish nonetheless.
Last but not least, we have the famous prawn mee from Old Airport Road. What is crucial for prawn mee is the broth and Whitley Rd's Big Prawn Noodle's broth definitely makes the cut. Their broth is very rich and flavorful most likely because they make their broth by using the heads of prawns which impart a lot of sweetness and flavor. The prawns that they gave was pretty huge as well and the noodles are quite soft. They have both the soup version and the dry version. If you're not feeling soupy, you can definitely try the dry version which is also mouthwateringly good.
Expected damage - $3.5 - $7
