Durian. Some of us can't stand the smell of it. Some of us love it. Whichever side you are on, there is one thing that you cannot deny and that is that durian is everywhere nowadays. A lot of places are starting to sell durian versions of everything for example MacDonald's has their durian Macflurry and even Grabfood is offering durian delivery.
Recently I had a chance to try Phoenix Lava. Phoenix Lava, if you didn't know is a bakery that is hugely popular in Bangkok. They are famous for their melty, gooey, molten core buns. They have various flavors from durian to uji matcha, sesame chocolate and even salted egg! I got mine from a pop up stall in Punggol waterway but from what I know they have a stall here in Singapore located at Raffles Xchange too.
You can choose to have them freshly steamed and piping hot or have them cold. I would advice if you want to eat them on the spot, it is better to get them hot but if you wish to bring them home to enjoy or to let someone else try then it is better for you to get the cold version. Anyway, the heating up process is really simple. Simply pop it into the microwave at 500W for 30 seconds along with a cup of water!
The normal ones such as matcha and chocolate cost $3.5 while the durian ones cost $3.8 per bun. I tried the durian molten core buns and boy it was delicious. Trust me, if you're a durian lover you definitely have to at least try one. The bun is firm to the touch but the moment you bite into it, the durian liquidy goodness oozes out into your mouth. The molten core is more liquidy than I originally expected but in all the good ways. The exterior layer and taste of the bun is sort of similar to the skin of our Chinese pao.
If you love durian or you are craving something duriany, be sure to give Phoenix Lava a try!
